Disciplines

What we recruit for, in detail

Five disciplines, with the roles and the technologies under each. If your role is not listed but sits next to one of these, it is still worth asking. If it is genuinely outside what we know, we will say so rather than take the brief.

Levels
Technician to engineering manager
Terms
Contract, permanent and fixed-term
Coverage
UK-wide, on site, hybrid and remote
Sectors
Industrial, instrumentation, medical, automotive, energy, defence, consumer and test

Embedded & firmware

Ref. 01

The core of what we do. Engineers who write the software that runs on the product itself, where the constraints are memory, power, timing and the hardware actually in front of them.

Roles we fill

  • Embedded software engineer
  • Firmware engineer
  • RTOS and bare-metal developer
  • Embedded Linux and Yocto engineer
  • Device driver and BSP engineer
  • DSP engineer
  • Embedded test and validation

What we look for on a CV

  • C and C++ on ARM Cortex-M and Cortex-A
  • STM32, PIC, NXP, Nordic, TI and Renesas parts
  • FreeRTOS, Zephyr, bare metal and embedded Linux
  • SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB and BLE
  • Bootloaders, OTA update and secure boot
  • MISRA, functional safety and certification work

Electronics & hardware

Ref. 02

The people who design the board. Analogue, digital, RF and power, through to layout, EMC and the test engineering that proves it works.

Roles we fill

  • Electronics design engineer
  • Hardware engineer
  • PCB layout engineer
  • FPGA engineer
  • ASIC and digital design engineer
  • RF and antenna engineer
  • Power electronics engineer
  • EMC and compliance engineer

What we look for on a CV

  • Schematic capture and multi-layer PCB layout
  • Altium, KiCad, OrCAD and Cadence
  • VHDL and Verilog, Xilinx and Intel parts
  • Analogue front ends, ADC and DAC design
  • Signal integrity and high-speed digital
  • Pre-compliance and EMC test

Software

Ref. 03

The application and platform engineers around the product: the tools, the services it talks to, and the interfaces people use to control it.

Roles we fill

  • Backend engineer
  • Full stack engineer
  • Desktop application engineer
  • Mobile engineer
  • QA and test automation engineer
  • Software architect
  • Engineering lead and manager

What we look for on a CV

  • C++, C#, Python, Go, Rust, Java
  • React, TypeScript and modern web front ends
  • Qt and native desktop tooling
  • APIs and service architecture
  • Automated test and CI pipelines

Cloud, data & AI

Ref. 04

The infrastructure and the models. Increasingly the same companies that build hardware also need the pipeline that carries its data and the models that make sense of it.

Roles we fill

  • DevOps and platform engineer
  • Site reliability engineer
  • Cloud engineer and architect
  • Data engineer
  • Machine learning engineer
  • Data scientist and analyst

What we look for on a CV

  • AWS, Azure and Google Cloud
  • Kubernetes, Docker and infrastructure as code
  • Terraform, CI/CD and observability
  • Python, PyTorch and TensorFlow
  • Edge and on-device inference

IT & security

Ref. 05

Keeping the business and its designs running and protected. Often overlooked in engineering companies until something goes wrong.

Roles we fill

  • Infrastructure engineer
  • Network engineer
  • Cyber security engineer and analyst
  • Security architect
  • IT support and systems administrator
  • IT manager

What we look for on a CV

  • Windows and Linux server estates
  • Networking, firewalls and VPN
  • SOC, SIEM and incident response
  • ISO 27001 and Cyber Essentials
  • Identity, access and endpoint management

Send the stack, the team it sits in and what would make you say no at interview. If we are not the right firm for it, we will say so on the first call rather than take the brief anyway.
